Guardiana is a public artwork developed through the 2021 STEPS CreateSpace Residency. The concept emerged from the desire to create changes to the built environment to address women's safety in the public space. Guardiana's design emerged from a research-based standpoint and community engagement and input.
The concept design for Guardiana emerged from research focused on faulty urban design properties of public spaces that created unsafe areas for women.

Community Engagement
We partnered up with the Women's Centre of Calgary, Calgary Immigrant Women Association (CIWA), and Skipping Stone during the community engagement portion of this project. With the art workshops presented in collaboration with the women-centred organizations, we sought to learn more about the intersectionality in the lack of safety for women in the public space by positioning POC, queer, & trans voices as the ground of the narrative.
Concepts used by participants when describing the artworks created during our workshops inspired the final design of the piece. Hence, the participants were listed (with their consent) as project collaborators in the acknowledgment plaque.
